This refreshingly blunt #1 NY Times bestselling how-to guide serves up 27 bite-sized chapters full of hilariously inspiring stories, transformational insights, easy exercises and the occasional swear word.
Via chapters such as “Your Brain is Your Bitch,” “Fear is for Suckers” and “My Subconscious Made Me Do It,” the book takes you on a wild joy ride to your own transformation and helps you create the money, relationships, careers and general all around awesomeness you so desire.
Truth be told, I was hesitant to start reading this one, purely because I think we need to stop looking for “how tos” and instead focus on developing our intuition and self-regulation skills to figure it out ourselves. That said, my sister and mother both recommeded this read so here goes.
I also appreciate that Jen calls out the sappy cringey self help style that once made her so skeptical, so it can’t be all that bad.
Yet another fantasy-type novel series! After finishing ACOTAR, this was a pretty natural progression. Be warned, it’s pretty corny and predictable, but an easy read and just a hint smutty.
The first three quarters of the book is focused on setting the scene of the protagonist, Violet Sorrengail and her journey through the “Rider’s Quadrant”. Young love, dragons, daggers, and deception galore.
Will be starting the next book in the series, Iron Flame, shortly. Stay tuned!
This book was impressive, and helpful in reminding the reader of what it means to hold strong character and morals, however, I coudn’t help but feel like Brooks was too eager to impress the reader with extravagant word choice to demonstrate intellect. It’s not an enjoyable feeling to spend more time looking up words than actually reading the text.
That being said, I enjoyed the anecdotes about impressive historical figures… people were just raised so different then than now… and though I consider myself pretty progressive - I fear for our society with the growing of the “Big Me” era. I highlighted a lot of points that I‘d like to revisit in the future, a great feature of the “Libby” app!
I was drawn to this book after watching a TikTok that discussed the detrimental mindset of overconsumption, overworking, and overdoing in general… This book encourages us to slow down, simplify, and focus on merely existing. It promotes the value of leisure, quiet time, and highlights how things like that Industrial Revolution, technology, and society have forced humans outside of their limits in a dangerously quick span of time. Will be reading this again!
If The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and Fifty Shades of Grey had a bizarre threesome… it would give you the ACOTAR series. I started reading these through my sister Cort and whipped through the books so fast I didn’t realize what insane an insane cult fan base these books have. A great escape!
I read this in one sitting… I think it took 4ish hours to get through the whole book and I couldn’t set it down. Colleen Hoover knocked it out of the park with this one, leaving her readers debating different possibilities between the bizarre story of an unsuspecting romance.
This was one of the our first book club books back in January of 2021 and I still cannot rave enough. If you’re seeking a psychological thriller with dynamic characters and a shocking ending, this one is for you 🙌🏼
